Asian Games 2018: Neeraj Chopra to be flag bearer of 572-members Indian contingent

Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was named the flag bearer for Indian contingent in the opening ceremony of upcoming Asian Games to be held in Indonesian city of Palembang and Jakarta. The news was made official by the Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Dhruv Batra during the send-off ceremony on Friday. He will lead a 572 member Indian contingent.

The ceremony will be held on 18th August in the capital city of Jakarta.

Achievements so far

He first rose to prominence by winning the 2015 National Championships with 77.67 mark.

Chopra came into limelight in 2016 when he broke the junior world record with a throw of 86.48m in the 2016 IAAF World Under-20 Championship held at Bydgoszcz, Poland.

The 20-years-old from Panipat won golden metal at 2017 Asian Championships (85.23m) in Bhubaneshwar.

He won gold at Gold Coast Commonwealth games with a throw of 86.47 in April.

The army man is the national record holder with a throw of 87.43m mark at the Doha Diamond League in May 2018.

He recently bagged a gold medal in the Savo Games in Finland after he defeated the Asian record holder Chao-Tsun Cheng of Chinese Taipei in July, after throwing 85.69 m

In the history

Indian hockey captain of that time Sardar Singh was the flag bearer for India in the 2014 edition of Asian Games at Incheon.
