Asian Games gold medallist Hakam Singh passes away in Sangrur

Asian Games gold medallist athlete Hakam Singh today passed away at a private hospital in Sangrur, Punjab. Singh was unwell from a long time and was undertaking liver and kidney disorder treatment.

He won gold medal in 20km race walk during the 1978 Asian Games at Bangkok. He also won a gold in the Asian Track and Field Meet held at Tokyo in 1979.

Singh who was currently serving in Punjab police once served as Havaldar in the 6 Sikh regiment. He is the recipent of the prestigious Dhyan Chand award.

Condoling the demise of the athlete, Punjab’s Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Rana Sodhi said that both Punjab as well as the country would remember the glorious achievements of Singh in the sporting arena. He further said that it is an end of an era and an unrestorable loss to the sports fraternity.
