Brimming with confidence, archer Madhumita Kumari now eyes Olympic gold

Thrilled with her performance in the recently concluded Asian Games, archer Mudhumita Kumari said that her dream is to win gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic. Kumari, 21, a resident of Ramgarh from the “Archery Power house” state of Jharkhand, won the silver medal in the women’s compound archery at 18th Asian Games teaming alongside Muskan Kirar and Jyothi Sureka Vennam.

“I have enough time to prepare and win the gold in the 2020 Olympic Games,” she told PTI over phone from New Delhi as reported by Business Standard.

“My focus now is to practice and achieve perfection in skill and win the gold,” said Madhumita, who has been awarded Rs 10 lakh by the Jharkhand government following her silver medal winning performance, added.

Where it all started

Being the third among four daughters of miner Jitendra Singh, the 21-year-old archer was selected for archery training by the TATA Steel feeder in West Bokaro area of Jharkhand and learned the first few lessons of the game there.

She was later admitted in Birsa Munda Archery Academy in Silli and got the training from coach Prakash Ram.

“It was the happiest day of my career when I won the silver for India in the Asian Games but my dream is to win Olympic gold in 2020 Olympic.”
