Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu sets CWG record and clinch first gold medal for India at Gold Coast. The Manipuri weightlifter lifted 86 kg in Snatch, surpassing her personal best of 85 kg in the Category. She lifted 80kg, 84kg and 86kg in her three attempts and then surpassed her 109 kg clean and jerk record to lift 110kg in the category. Chanu lifted 103, 107 and 110 in her three attempts of clean and jerk. She lifted a total of 196 to top the charts in the women’s 48 kg weightlifting category.

Sri Lanka’s Dinusha Gomes who lifted 155 kg to clinch Bronze and Mauritius’ Marie Hanitra Roilya RANAIVOSOA won the silver with a total lift of 170 kg.

Chanu was not at her best in the Rio Olympics, but later went on to become the world champion in 2017 and now a gold at CWG speaks the volume of her determination and a she is allready a probable contender for a medal at Asian Games and Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Chanu works as a senior ticket checker with the Indian Railways. She had qualified for the CWG with a national record lift of 194kg that won her gold at the World Weightlifting Championships, becoming just the second Indian after Karnaman Malleswari.

Earlier, India’s Gururaja won the first medal for India in the competition by winning the silver in the men’s 56 kg weight category. Full report: CWG 2018: Gururaja claims first medal for India.

Muthupandi Raja will later compete in men’s 62 kg weightlifting. The event is expected to start from 2.12 pm IST.
