Move over South Africa, stats prove India are the new chokers of world cricket

Team India put up a spectacular show in the ongoing world cup after they topped the league table with 16 points in 9 games that included a washed off game against New Zealand. The men in blue will be up against a dejected New Zealand side who have faced three consecutive defeats in their last three league games. The Virat Kohli led side was determined to pip the black caps and avenge the defeat the they got in the warm up game but the game turned out to be a different story alltogether.

New Zealand scored 239/8 after 50 overs courtesy Ross Taylor’s brilliance of 74 off 90 balls. In the tricky chase, India lost its top three batsman under five and it was the job of an under-firing middle order to deliver.

Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni put up a show by adding 116 runs for the seventh wicket but the dismissal of these two batsman in the conclusive overs meant that India fall short of the target by 18 runs to bow out of the world cup.

Is India the new chokers of world cricket

South Africa were considered the chokers of world cricket for failing at the big stage but recent records sway the needle towards India. The men in blue have not enjoyed a great record in the ICC events since 2014. The men in blue led by MS Dhoni finished the second best in 2014 World T20 final against Sri Lanka. They lost the World Cup 2015 semi-final to Australia in 2015.

The losing streak didn’t ended here as they lost a evenly contested World T20 semi-final to West Indies in a high scoring thriller in Mumbai. They were the favourites to win the 2017 Champions trophy but a high profile performance by Pakistan in the finals meant that India finished as the runner-ups.

Virat Kohli has also failed to make a mark in the knock-out stages of the ICC tournaments and that’s why fans are demanding to make Rohit Sharma the new white ball captain.

Edit 10 November, 2022– India again got hammered in the semi finals of t20 world cup of 2022 after they were thrashed by England by 10 wickets. Captain changed, lots of faces changed but time didn’t change as the quest to bag an ICC title still continue.
