PV Sindhu clinches Singapore Open 2022, clinches her maiden Super 500 title

PV Sindhu earned her maiden 500 Super Series title as she thumped a much improving Wang Zhi-Yi of China 21-9, 11-21, 21-15 in the finals of Singapore $750,000 tournament. Sindhu was playing in her first Super 500 final since 2018 Thailand Open and this time she emerged victorious. She has played finals of Super 500 two time(i.e.-India open 2018 and Thailand open 2018) but lost on both occasions to Beiwen Zhang of USA and Nozomi Okuhara of Japan respectively.

Sindhu is second Indian woman player to win the Singapore Open and third Indian overall. Saina Nehwal won the title in 2010 and Sai Praneeth won the men’s singles title in 2017 after beating Kidambi Srikanth in the finals.

Sindhu who won two Super 300 finals in the year started well in the finals against Wang of China and managed a healthy lead to win the first game 21-9. Wang turned the tides in the second game and didn’t give any chance to Sindhu and won the game 11-21.

It was a neck to neck battle in the third game but Sindhu went into the break 11-7. After the break Wang showed some resistance and brought it to 12-10 to bring the momentum towards herself. Sindhu took up the challenge and managed to eke ahead and took a healthy lead, eventually winning the game 21-15 to win her first Super 500 title.

This comes as a huge boost for Sindhu who will lead India’s charge at Commonwealth Games, starting July 28. After the match, Sindhu said that she will relax a bit after this title but its not the end, its just the starting of a new beginning.
