Sania Mirza makes a thunderous comeback after maternal leave, wins Hobart International in women's doubles

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza won the Hobart International women’s doubles title along with Nadiia Kichenok of Ukraine after returning to tennis court after a gap of 2 years. Sania returned to the tennis court after becoming a mother and played some impressive tennis from last 1 week. Along with Nadiia, Sania defeated the pair of Zhang Shuai and Peng Shuai in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the Hobart International title.

“This is what happens when you don’t expect anything out of the tournament and it teaches us not to put any pressure on ourselves. I just came here to get some matches in before getting into Melbourne(Australian Open) and yeah i just wanna say, i could not have asked for a better comeback. And Hobart is special to me in many ways and its amazing that it happened in Hobart and i would like to thank my partner for playing with me,” Sania said at the winner presentation ceremony.

On Friday, Sania and Kichenok defeated Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia and Mari Buzkova of the Czech Republic 7-6, 6-2 in an hour and 24 minutes in the semi-finals.

Sania was away from tennis for two years after becoming a mother. She married Pakistani International cricketer Shoaib Malik on 12 April 2010 and gave birth to a baby boy named Izhaan in October 2018. She played the last tournament in October 2017.

Sania, who has taken Indian tennis to new heights, has been number one in doubles and is a six-times Grand Slam winner. She quit playing singles in 2013 owing to injuries and turned her attention to doubles, which made her one of the greatest doubles player in the world.
