Sporting world reacts to the sudden demise of Goa CM Manohar Parrikar

India’s former defense minister and the current Chief Minister of Goa- Manohar Parrikar passed away on Sunday after battling a deadly pancreatic cancer. His medical condition took a critical turn when he was diagnosed with cancer and went to United States for treatment last march. He returned back to India in June after his medical treatment.

The four time chief minister of Goa was put on life support system late Saturday night and chief minister office of Goa confirmed about his critical health condition on Sunday evening. He passed away at around 6.40 PM on Sunday evening. He is survived by his two sons after his wife Media passed away in 2001 due to cancer.

Parrikar’s early life

An engineer from IIT Mumbai in metallurgical engineering, Parrikar was the first IITian to become an MLA of an Indian state.

Parrikar, 63, joined RSS at a young age and went onto become chief instructor in the final years of his academic career. He broke into politics when he was elected to the legislative assembly of Goa in 1994. He became the leader of opposition in 1999 and later went onto become the chief minister of Goa in 2000.

The BJP stalwart went onto become the defense minister from 2014-2017 before he moved back to Goa for his fourth term of being the chief minister of the state.

Parrikar was paid tribute by India’s sporting world after he left us on Sunday.
