Former Chennai Super Kings spinner retires from all forms of cricket

Spinner Shadab Jakati, who was the pillar of the Chennai Super Kings spin bowling attack from 2008 to 2013 season, bid adieu to all forms of cricket on Friday. The Goa born left arm orthodox spinner has also played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Lions.

Jakati was the top Indian spinner for CSK way before R. Ashwin got the recognition and Ravindra Jadeja got into the team in 2012. The 39-year-old generated a lot of turn on the pace friendly wickets in South Africa during the 2009 IPL and was instrumental in rise of the team.

Jakati has scored 2734 runs in 92 first-class matches at an average of 22.04, including 1 century and 14 fifties, his highest score being an unbeaten 100. He played a total of 59 matches in the IPL and took 47 wickets. Jakati played an important role in 2010 when Chennai Super Kings won the IPL title for the first time. The Vasco da Gama made his debut in 1998/99 season and will end with 275 wickets in 92 first class matches. He was a rising star in the initial stages of the IPL but the dominance of Harbhajan Singh and rise of R Ashwin didn’t helped his cause and he was never picked to play for India.

“Just announced my retirement from all forms of cricket. Even though I have not been playing much over the last 1 year, it has been one of the harder things I have done in my life.Thank you @BCCI @goacricket11 with sincere gratitude 4 making me live my dream for the last 23 years,” tweeted Jakati.

“At this juncture as I look back at my career I wish to thank with sincere gratitude my family, friends who have stood by me all the while. @BCCI #GCA, senior cricketers, all my fellow teammates, support staff with whom I have spent moments which I shall cherish all my life,” he further said in a tweet.
