IPL is the ninth most followed sports in the world on social media

In the follow up to India’s success in the 2007 World T20, BCCI started IPL in 2008 to make India the best limited overs side in the world. The league started paying dividends with talents like Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and others emerging from the world’s most money making cricket league.

However, 11 years prior to the first IPL season, the world’s richest league is now the ninth most followed sports in the world on social media. It shows how the league has been creating the buzz on social media. A study by KPMG Football Benchmark has revealed most followed sports tournament in the world.

They counted the total number of followers on facebook, twitter, instagram and youtube channel. The study reveals that UEFA champions league is the most followed sports in the world with 141 million followers across social media. USA’s basletball league NBA is the second most followed sports with 119 million followers.

England’s English Premier League, LA Liga from Spain and FIFA World Cup take the third, fourth and fifth spot respectively. NFL, UFA and ICC Cricket World Cup takes the 6th, 7th and 8th spot respectively after which IPL takes the number 9th spot.
