Reports: BCCI considering split captaincy between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Ever since India’s shocking loss to New Zealand in world cup semi-finals by 18 runs, two questions have been doing round- One is the retirement of MS Dhoni and the future of Virat Kohli after world cup debacle. India topped the table with 16 points in 9 games that includes a washed off game against New Zealand and a loss against England.

The men in blue were the heavyweights to lift the crown but they failed to perform when it mattered the most and fans are blaming skipper Virat Kohli for the loss.

BCCI considering split captaincy ?

After the World Cup debacle, the cricket governing body is considering a split in the captaincy with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli leading India in limited overs and test format. India prefers one captain across all three formats but there have been instances when the board has taken up the split captaincy. Anil Kumble was the test captain in 2007-2008 and MS Dhoni led the team in white ball cricket. After MS Dhoni’s retirement from test cricket in 2014, Virat Kohli was made the skipper in test format while Dhoni continued as the leader in ODI format.

Hindustan Times referred a report that quoted about a BCCI official felt that top teams start preparing for the next world cup after one campaigns ends and cited the example of England, who were ruled out of the 2015 World Cup from group stage. The Three Lions led by Eoin Morgan, revamped their side after 2015 world cup debacle and roped in some fearless cricketers which finally got them the results.

“This would be the right time for Rohit to take over the mantle of the captaincy in the 50-over format. There has been immense support to the present captain and the management and it is time to plan ahead for the next World Cup and for that the existing ideas and plans need a fresh look. We all know some areas need a relook. Rohit would be the right man for the job,” the official told IANS as reported by Hindustan Times.

The biggest concern for the BCCI has been the different ideologies of Rohit and Virat. The matter will now be assessed by Committee of Administrators, featuring Virat Kohli, head coach Ravi Shastri and chief selector MSK Prasad.
