The defending champions got a boost with the return of David Warner and Steve Smith and were considered the favourites to retain their title. They suffered some injury blows which didn’t go their way and they lost to England in the semis after finishing at the second spot in league stage with 14 points in nine games.

The men in blue were against a dejected New Zealand side in the semi-finals, who faced three consecutive defeats in their last three league games.

The Kiwi team put up a score of 239 in 50 overs at slow wicket of Manchester. Their pace trio of Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson put up a show and gave early blows to India after which they failed to recover. MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja added 106 runs for 7th wicket but it was not enough to eke out a win.

The runner-ups put up a great show in the World Cup and punched above their weights to shock one and all. They lost their last three league stage games but managed to progress courtesy of their better run rate than Pakistan.

They created the biggest upset of the tournament after defeating India in the 1st semi-final by 18 runs. They put up a fight against England in the finals, but luck and umpiring decisions didn’t helped their cause and they lost the evenly contested finals in the super over.

The Eoin Morgan led side created history as they won the World Cup trophy after pipping New Zealand in a dramatic final at Lord’s. ICC World Cup got a new world champion after a gap of 23 years. The World Cup started on England soil in 1975 and the home team took 44 years to lift the World Cup trophy.

England finished the group stage with 12 points in nine games and finished at the third spot.
